NIOSH's guidance for schools, makerspaces, and small manufacturers points to one answer: put grouped printers in a dedicated, ventilated space instead of spreading them across the room you work in. Until now, that meant a contractor, drywall, permits, and weeks of dust — or an industrial modular room that costs more to ship than to build.

The Fume Room is that dedicated space, engineered the way a machine should be: a rigid aluminum frame with composite panels that bolts together in an afternoon, contains and concentrates fumes at the source, and gives your exhaust system one clean job — move them outside.

How it works: contain, concentrate, exhaust

The room isn't a sealed box — a sealed box has nowhere for air to go. It's an engineered airflow path. A filtered makeup-air inlet sits low on one wall; two pre-cut exhaust takeoffs sit high on the other. Your exhaust fan pulls air through the room in one direction, so the room breathes in — never out. Fumes, odors, and heat ride the airflow to the duct instead of drifting to your desk.

  • Frame: 1.5" T-slot aluminum extrusion — the same structural system used in automation cells and lab equipment worldwide. No welding. No field cutting.
  • Panels: rigid aluminum composite with a fire-rated core (Class A flame spread, ASTM E84). Window and full-view polycarbonate options available.
  • Door: full-height hinged door with positive latch and viewing pane.
  • Exhaust-ready: two 6" takeoff collars with blanking plates, matched to our ducting guides. Add our fan/duct kit, or connect your own.
  • Nothing to wire: sealed pass-through grommets route your power and network. No integrated electrical means nothing between you and running printers.

Who it's for

The Fume Room is freestanding equipment: it isn't fastened to your structure, slab, or utilities, so in most facilities it typically doesn't require a building permit — confirm with your local authority; we include guidance in the documentation pack, and PE-stamped structural calcs are available if your facility asks. When you move, it moves with you.

Why not the industrial modular guys?

We priced them. A leading modular-room supplier quoted a smaller room at $7,500 — then added $7000+ in freight. Their rooms ship as oversized fragile crates. Ours was engineered from the first drawing to flat-pack: no component over 96 inches, the whole room on one standard pallet (~1,200 lb) at normal freight class. That's not a discount — it's a design decision, and it's why the landed price is what it is.

Do I need a permit to install it?
The Fume Room is freestanding equipment — not attached to your building's structure, foundation, or utilities — and in most facilities typically doesn't require a building permit. Local interpretation varies, so confirm with your authority having jurisdiction; our documentation pack includes guidance, and PE-stamped calcs are available.

Does it eliminate 3D printer fumes?
The room's job is containment: it contains and concentrates fumes so your exhaust system can move them outside, instead of letting them drift through your workspace. Ducting to the exterior is the approach health guidance recommends for grouped printers. Our fume room connects easily to a 4" exhaust duct vie our bolt on bracket. For operations that need commercial-grade filtration assurance, ask us about pairing the room with the industrial grade filter by Donaldson.

What about PLA-only farms?
Every filament off-gasses at some level — the question is what level of management fits your space, your machine count, and your sensitivity. Many of our customers running professional environments manage PLA the same way they manage everything else.

Can I put my laser in it?
If your laser is already a fully enclosed Class 1 system (like a desktop fiber marker in its own safety enclosure), the Fume Room adds a light-tight, access-controlled, ventilated space around it. It is not a laser safety enclosure and is not rated for open-beam Class 4 operation.

Is it a cleanroom?
It's a containment room — negative pressure, exhausting out. A positive-pressure filtered configuration is on our roadmap; contact us if that's your use case.

Can it be used for paint or spray finishing?
No. Spray finishing requires purpose-built booths under separate fire codes.

How does it ship?
One standard 48×96 pallet, roughly 1,200 lb, standard LTL freight with liftgate available. No component is longer than 96 inches.

How long does assembly take?
Two people, hand tools, an afternoon. Every part is cut, drilled, and labeled; the video guide walks the full sequence.
